Flora & Fauna

There are parts of the coast where the natural landscape survives intact, with little, if any, human intervention.

The limestone karst has given rise to striking natural formations both at sea level and above and the proximity of the sea and the irregular topography of the area allow traditional Mediterranean plant species such as broom, euphorbia and myrtle to thrive. In Spring, wild rosemary scents the paths and freesia and cistus grow freely. Bee and monkey orchids are also often spotted. Elsewhere Holm oak, alder, beech, and chestnut trees are equally at home, as are some species of fern, butterwort, dwarf palms, and endemic carnivorous species.

The fauna is varied but less unusual, with foxes, martens, and otters. You will see mules and herds of sheep and goats as you walk, and in summer there is an abundance of butterflies and lizards. High above you may spot peregrine falcons, kestrels and buzzards but also be aware that adders and vipers are indigenous too. They are shy creatures and will flee at the sound of your approach. Whilst they are not aggressive, they will defend themselves if caught unawares and trodden on.
