Local Handicrafts
In addition to paper making, the region also has a rich heritage of ceramic making dating back to the C15th.
If you are interested in learning more, there is a good Museum of Ceramics at Vietri. The beach at Marina di Vietri is a fabulous place to collect sea glass and pottery pieces – there are more pieces of broken pottery on the beach than shells!
The tiny island of Procida in the bay of Naples is famous for its lace making and embroidery, which you may see for sale. Diving for red coral for jewellery making still takes place off Torre del Greco, though water pollution threatens its sustainability.
Marquetry is another traditional artisan craft, with Sorrento having been particularly important in this field in the C19th.
