Day 1

Around Corpo di Cava

We offer a relatively easy walk for today, or alternatively you could take the train to visit Pompeii (see Option B further below)

Option A: Circular walk from Corpo di Cava: 7km, 3hrs; ascent / descent 435m; longer option: 14km, 7hrs; ascent / descent 1335m

Overview

We suggest a gentle introductory circuit which starts from the village’s impressive Benedictine monastery, founded in the 11th century and later restored in Baroque style. The route leads through chestnut woods and crosses streams to rise to an ancient chapel from where there are fine views of the coast. You return to Corpo di Cava via another chapel which again boasts wonderful coastal panoramas.

If you are feeling energetic, you could continue up from the ancient chapel to cross the eastern part of the Lattari Mountains, all the way to the cliff-edge Avvocata Monastery, from where you are rewarded with superior views that include Mount Vesuvius to the north and a far-reaching panorama along the peninsula.

This out-and-back walk follows a well-used trail leading from Badia della SS Trinitá up to the ancient chapel of Cappella Vecchia, a great spot to linger and enjoy a picnic, where fine views appear over the Bay of Salerno and Amalfi Coast.

If you are feeling energetic, you could continue onwards (and upwards) across the eastern part of the Lattari Mountains, all the way up to the cliff-edge Avvocata Monastery, set at nearly 900m altitude, where you are rewarded with superior views that include Mt. Vesuvius to the north and a far-reaching panorama along the peninsula, south of Salerno. This will double your walk distance for the day.

Food & Drink: Take supplies from Corpo di Cava (pay locally) as the route is remote.

Important

If doing the extension to Avvocata, this involves a steep pull and the path is rocky, loose and narrow in places with significant drops. Do not attempt in poor weather conditions.

Option B: Visit Pompeii

From Corpo di Cava, you are well placed to visit Pompeii. This is usually a direct train ride from nearby Cava dei Tirreni.

Access

Train: Cava de Tirreni – Nocera Inferiore (11 mins)

Bus: Nocera Inferiore – Pompei (39 mins)

In Nocera Inferiore, the bus calls at Piazza Statione, Exit the train station cross the leafy square and turn right onto Via Bruno Grimaldi. You will find the bus stop on the corner.

In Pompei, the bus calls approx 50m from the red station building station at the bus stop for the SITA bus services on the main road SS18.

Departures are approximately every 30min, but we do suggest they be confirmed at your hotel reception before heading out, (or at www.trenitalia.it)

You could ask the hotel to arrange transport between the hotel and Cava de Tirreni railway station (payable locally). This journey by car takes approximately 10 minutes. Alternatively, make use of the local bus (line 61 Badia-Cava) which picks up in Corpo di Cava and drops you near the station (Cava Ferrovia). Please check the latest timetable with your hotel reception, or check timetables here www.fsbusitaliacampania.it/ (Italian only).
