Around Positano
For a final walk, we describe a fairly demanding (but not overlong) circular route into the soaring mountainside behind Positano, offering dramatic scenery and lofty views.
Alternatively, you may like to take a boat trip from Positano to soak up the stunning views of the dramatic coastline – currently there are daily tours to either Amalfi or in the other direction across to Capri. Please check the latest schedules at your hotel or from the kiosks located by the jetty.
Option A: Circular walk from Positano: 6.5km, 3.5hrs; ascent / descent 640m
We recommend a thrilling route that penetrates the wild rugged mountainside behind Positano, some of the steepest and most exhilarating of the whole coastline. You ascend via an ancient, well-preserved mule-track which offers magnificent bird's-eye views over Positano. At its top, you reach the church of Santa Maria Castello, set beneath some of the highest peaks of the Monte Lattari range, and which also overlooks the Bay of Naples. There is a rustic bar-restaurant nearby for a well deserved lunch, before you descend via forest-clad slopes back to Positano.
Alternatively, you could spend the exploring Positano’s tiers of houses linked by narrow alleyways and stairways lined with boutiques. You could also take a boat trip from Positano along the coast (pay locally) for a day of leisurely sightseeing.
Food & Drink
Close to Bar Internazionale, there is a mini-market and fruit store to purchase supplies. There is a restaurant-bar at the top near Santa Maria del Castello and agriturismo for lunch, (please check opening locally especially in low season).
Access
To alleviate the first part of the ascent, we recommend starting from Bar Internazionale in the upper part of town, accessed by small blue-orange local buses (Mobility Amalfi Coast). Services depart from Piazza dei Mulini in Positano – this is where the pedestrian lane from the main beach (Spiaggia Grande) meets the small square by the internal tarmac road. The buses run every half-hour on the hour and half-hour and it takes 5-10 minutes to reach Bar Internazionale (tickets can be purchased on board with supplement or from a Tabacchi shop).

Option B: Circular walk on Capri: 7.25km, 3hrs; total ascent 310m / total descent 300m
Overview
The resort islands of Capri makes for a good day trip, even if just to see why the island has attracted so many people for so many hundreds of years. There are plenty of fast ferries there from Positano. This walk covers the less-visited but equally splendid sights on the eastern part of the island, which are quicker to access from the port, and especially worth considering during the busier parts of the season.
Food & Drink
Facilities are available at Marina Grande and Anacapri, although food and drink is generally quite expensive on the island. You may prefer to take some supplies with you, which would give you more time to enjoy the featured walk.
Arrival on Capri
On Capri, all services disembark at Marina Grande: take the funicular up to Piazza Umberto I in Capri Town, (services every 15min – purchase tickets beforehand from the kiosk located further R along the quay).
